New State Today- Illinois

June 6th – Day 4. Racine, WI. To Chicago, IL.  82 miles – Total Miles. 263

Weather – Partly cloudy, 70  degrees,  slight tail wind

After a great visit with our good friends Doug and Kim we said good bye and thanks and headed towards Chicago.  It was so nice to see them and their son.  We started early which was good because we got lost just getting out of Racine!!  Oh no this was going to be one of those days!!

It really was a tough day the route took us on lots and lots of trails and we got lost on them several times.  It normally is the transitions between the trails that are difficult and then when you have multiple trails fairly close sometimes it is hard to make sure you are on the right one.

Luckily, late in the day , we met up with a gentleman, Christopher, who was coming back from a bicycle ride on a trail we were traveling on and lead us all the way thru the trail system to get us to Edgewood, IL   It was great to just follow someone who knew where they were going,  he was an interesting man and was able to give us lots of history of the trail system.  After Christopher took off we had about 15 miles to get to our Warm Showers stay just north of Chicago.

Five miles were on a very busy road – Devon Ave at rush hour. After battling thru Devon Ave we were happy to get on the Lake Shore Trail for the last ten miles of our ride for the day. The trail was very nice and amazing busy.  The views of Lake Michigan were great.  We were on the trail between 6:00 – 7:00pm and our host told us it is one of the busier times on the trail.

We arrived at our hosts house later than normal due to our various delays.  Luckily Rod and Laura were fine with our late arrival.  We cleaned up and ordered Chinese.   Over dinner we learned more about our hosts.  Rod and Laura actually completed a 2 year, WORLD bicycle tour when they were in their 20’s.  You think we have amazing stories you should hear theirs.

After much conversation it was time to get ready for the next day and get some much needed sleep after a long day.

More tomorrow and hopefully pictures and videos,  I am still working on that – not sure what the problem is.
