Rainy Day on the Bicycle
June 4th – Day 2. Mishicot, WI – Cedarburg, WI 87 Miles. Total Miles – 129
Weather- Cool, rainy and head wind
Today we got up and going early because they were calling for rain later in the day. After breakfast at Aunt Florence’s house we took off towards Two Rivers and the Mariner Trail. Of course we had to stop for our second breakfast of the day in Two Rivers to get the additional calories we needed to make it through the long day ahead. We met some very nice people at the restaurant who wanted to hear all about our trip.
Then on to the Mariner Trail towards Manitowoc. If you have never bicycled on this trail it is beautiful right on Lake Michigan and the local clubs and organization have done an amazing job of landscaping along the trail. Beautiful flower beds are in abundance along the trail.
Once through Manitowoc we followed Lake Shore Drive most of the way to Sheboygan. It is a great road with little traffic and great views of Lake Michigan. The Town of Oostburg was next and they had a trail head building with restrooms and directions and information for the Ozaukee Interurban Trail. The trail begins in Oostburg and goes all the way down to the Mequon area. It is a really nice trail except for the sections where you have to go thru town and then try to find the trail again. Unfortunately it also started to rain in Oostburg and we got a shower for the last 30 or so miles of our ride. Luckily we were on the trail most of the way until we got lost trying to find the trail thru Port Washington and had to ride on a County Road for about 5 miles. The road spray from the cars was not fun!! Oh well, eventually we found our way back to the trail which was nice because we also got away from the road spray from there cars.
We finally made it to Cedarburg and are staying with a couple thru the Warm Showers program. Val and Bob our Warm Shower hosts told us about the Silver Creek Brewery which of course we had to stop at to get a beer. The brewery was built in a refurbished mill and you can see the stream coming right thru a section of the brewery, very nice to see a historic building be used.
After a beer we headed over to our stay for the night. Val and Bob made us an amazing dinner and we chatted and got to know each other over dinner and dessert. Very nice.
The day started out a bit tough dealing with the rain and getting lost several times but ended nicely- this seems to happen often and usually is the result of an act kindness.
Tomorrow we head to Racine, WI and will be traveling from Cedarburg to Milwaukee with another Warm Shower host from Cedarburg. Keith offered us a place to stay for the night but we already had a spot – he then contacted us to see if he and a buddy could ride with us to Milwaukee. It will be nice to have company.
Will add some pictures and hopefully a video of the Mariner Trail tomorrow.
