Nice Ride to Necedah
Day 38 -July 8, 2014. LaCrosse, WI – Necedah, WI – 77 miles (total miles 2460)
Weather, nice – 70-75 degrees, partly cloudy with a nice tailwind
Today we left LaCrosse about 8:00am after breakfast and visiting with Melissa and Dillon. It was great to be able to spend a couple of days with Melissa and Dillon and squeeze our kittens!! Everyone is good and we all enjoyed our visit. Thanks for putting us up Melissa and Dillon.
The first 30 miles of our ride was on the LaCrosse River Trail – the trail was in good shape except for the trees that hand been blown down across the trail. We had to pick up our bike and carry it over at least four downed trees. The ride was not too difficult on the unpaved trail. We made it to Sparta and stopped for our second breakfast at Ginny’s Cupboard – a favorite restaurant of ours. The Pecan rolls were delicious and were enough to get us to our next stop.
The next 40 miles were on county roads and Hwy 21. The county roads were great with little or no traffic, Hwy 21 is a bit of a challenge with lots of traffic and a rather small shoulder. Although we did not have to travel on it too long and the vehicle drivers were good about going wide around us. We got into our home for the night – The St. Joseph Inn and Campground at about 3:00pm. We were planning to camp but they had a cabin available for a whole $8.00 more than camping and we took it!! The young man who checked us in said it was pretty rustic (although it did have electricity, heat and air conditioning) and we would need to use the showers and restrooms across from it. We just laughed and told him it would be fine and were excited to get it. This was our first cabin stay and it is very nice and comfortable!!
We had another surprise this evening when Chuck and Kleva Bickford (parents of Kim Intense – who is a longtime friend of ours – she is married to Peter’s best friend from high school – Doug) showed up from New Lisbon (which is very close to Necedah). They had been following Peter’s Facebook postings and knew we were close to them. Kleva sent a message the night before to see if we could get together – we said definitely. They arrived at our campground and offered to show us the sites and then take us out to dinner – of course we were thrilled to go. We had a nice evening and it was great to catch up with them. Dinner was delicious (thanks for treating) and the dinner company was even better.
Just wanted to let you know Tracy’s eye is much better – the eye drops have worked and the eye is pretty much 100%. Tracy plans to go to her eye doctor when we get to Green Bay just to have him double check and make sure all is well. Peter is very happy Tracy can read the maps again and navigate our trip!!
